YMS boys wrap up season Saturday
The Yuma Middle School boys basketball teams wrap up their seasons Saturday in the A-Team League Tournament in Wray.
YMS’s seventh-grade team has lost only once all season and is the top seed out of the East Division. The Indians’ first game is 10:30 a.m. against the Brush-Burlington winner. A win puts them in the championship game at 1 p.m., while a loss would mean the third-place game at 12 noon. The other side of the bracket features top-seed Sterling, Wray and Fort Morgan.
The eighth-grade is the second seed out of the East, and plays Sterling at 9:15 a.m. A win would send them to the semifinals against top-seed Fort Morgan at 11:45 a.m. The championship is at 2:15 p.m., and the third-place game is 1 p.m. A first round loss would result in the fifth-place game at 10:45 a.m. The other side of the bracket has top-seed Wray, Brush and Burlington.
The eighth-grade B-team finished with a 10-1 record, winning the B-Team Tournament for the East Division, last Friday in Burlington.
Yuma first beat Burlington 31-7. Beau Tate had nine points, Cheyenne Martinez six, Kevin Villalba five, Jesus Ruiz five, Conner Lynch four and Javier Gamboa two. The Indians then beat Wray, 47-27. Gamboa had 13 points, Andre Baucke 12, Tate nine, Martinez six, Lynch three, Villalba two and Ruiz two.
The sevies also closed out a successful season by winning its B-Team Tournament. The Indians first beat Burlington, 32-12, then rolled past Wray, 32-22, for the title.
The YMS teams wrapped up the regular season last Thursday in Sterling.
The eighth-grade A-Team lost 49-25 after being within four points in the first half. Kobe Rayl had nine points, Jose Ruiz eight, Yahir Trejo six and Gamboa two. The B-team suffered a 24-18 loss. Baucke had seven points, Gamboa five, Tate three, Lynch two and Martinez one.
The seventh-grade A-Team lost a close one, 26-24. The sevies also pulled out an exciting win over Wray two days earlier, 26-25, hanging on for the win after getting outscored 20-6 in the third quarter. The eighth-grade A-Team lost to Wray, but Yuma won both B-team games.
