Lone Star and Genoa-Hugo/Karval are the top seeds in the girls and boys Class 1A District 5 Tournament taking place all this week at various locations.
The district is a combination of the YWKC League, and the 1A schools from the Union Pacific, creating a 10-team bracket.
The action began this past Monday night with pig-tail games among the bottom four seeds. Hi-Plains and Flagler hosted the games. On the girls side, Bethune beat Flagler, 41-36, and Genoa-Hugo/Karval won 30-26 over Deer Trail. The Bethune boys beat Flagler 57-48, and Hi-Plains beat Deer Trail, 49-13.
Girls quarterfinals were held this past Tuesday at the top two seeds. At top-seed Lone Star, the Longhorns beat Genoa-Hugo/Karval, 45-33, while fifth-seed Hi-Plains beat fourth-seed Arickaree/Woodlin, 44-35. At second-seed Stratton, the Eagles beat No. 10 Bethune, 70-32, and third-seed Idalia knocked off sixth-seed Otis, 71-36.
Boys quarterfinals were held Wednesday, again at the top two seeds. At Genoa-Hugo, the Pirates beat Bethune, 51-36, and fourth-seed Otis took out fifth-seed Arickaree-Woodlin, 43-34. At second-seed Idalia, the Wolves rolled past Hi-Plains, 74-31,while No. 3 Stratton ended No. 6 Lone Star’s season with a 75-35 win.
District 5 action now moves to Brush for the final two days.
The semifinals will be Friday. On the girls side, Stratton is taking on Idalia at 4 p.m., and Lone Star plays Hi-Plains at 7. The boys semifinals will be at 5:30 p.m., with Idalia taking on Stratton, and Genoa-Hugo/Karval playing Otis at 8:30 p.m.
Semifinal losers will meet in the third-place game Saturday at Brush, the girls at 1 p.m., followed by the boys. The girls championship is set for 4 p.m., followed by the boys.
The top three teams in each bracket will advance to regional, next weekend.
