Lone Star’s girls basketball team has moved into the Class 1A Top 10 after a strong start to the 2021-22 season, last weekend.
The Longhorns debuted in the CHSAANow.com’s rankings this week at No. 8. Lone Star, 2-0, looks to keep it rolling when it plays No. 2 Briggsdale to open the Prairie Classic on Friday. The Longhorns play again Saturday at Prairie, then host fourth-ranked Merino on Tuesday.
They opened the season by winning the Arickaree Tournament, last weekend.
First up was a 62-43 win over the North Park Wildcats, last Friday.
Alivia Weathers had 22 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals, Alison Davis 15 pionts and six rebounds, Ana Lockard eight points, four rebounds and two assists, Lamya Kuntz seven points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists, Amanda Kubitz four points and six rebounds, Aleighcea Kuntz four points, five steals and three rebounds, and Hailey Forry two points.
The Longhorns claimed the tournament title on Saturday with a 67-29 win over Arickaree/Woodlin. They ran out to a 22-11 lead in the first quarter and never looked back on their way to the 38-point win.
Weathers had 24 points, seven steals, five assists and four rebokunds. Aleighcea Kuntz 20 points an two rebounds, Davis 13 points and six rebounds, Kubitz four points and five rebounds, Forry four points, L. Kuntz five steals, three rebounds and three assists, and Lockard two points.
A/W girls go 1-1
The Arickaree/Woodlin girls basketball team is 1-1 heading into the Prairie Classic, this weekend.
The Indian Mustangs will play Prairie on Friday, then return for another on Saturday. They host Deer Trail on Tuesday.
Arickaree/Woodlin hosted its own tournament last weekend, opening with a 52-30 win over Genoa-Hugo/Karval, last Friday.
Joslyn King had 25 points and 14 rebounds, Wynter Van Ness 12 points, five assists and three steals, Cora Schrock seven points and five rebounds, Tori Arfsten four points and three rebounds, McKenna Jesse two points, four rebounds and two assists, Raeya Schrock two points, and Lilly Monat five rebounds.
Arickaree/Woodlin then took on Lone Star in the tournament first-place game on Saturday, suffering a 67-29 loss. Statistics for the Indian Mustangs were not available.
Otis boys open 1-1
The Otis boys basketball team is 1-1 heading into the second week of the 2021-22 season.
Otis hosts Weldon Valley today, December 9, then travels to Merino, ranked No. 6 in Class 1A, on Friday.
The Bulldogs opened the season last weekend, finishing second in the Peetz Tournament.
They began the season with a 55-46 win over Peetz. Charlie Kendrick had 14 points, Jack Willeke 14, JJ Ward 12, Taylor Ringlein seven, Sawyer Packer four and Jacob Perry two.
They played for the tournament title on Saturday, losing 58-25 to Prairie. Willeke had 15 points, Kendrick six, and Ward and Packer two each.
Lone Star boys
The Lone Star boys basketball team hosts Briggsdale on Friday, after opening the season last weekend.
Lone Star also was at Peetz this past weekend.
The Longhorns began the season last Friday in the Arickaree/Woodlin Tournament, losing 51-34 to North Park. They fell behind 13-6 in the first quarter and never could recover. Lone Star stats were not available.
The Longhorns then played Arickaree/Woodlin in the third-place game on Saturday. A final score and statistics were not reported as of earlier this week.
