The Otis High School baseball team wraps up the regular season today, April 27, with a home doubleheader against Cheyenne Wells, beginning at 10 a.m.
The Bulldogs then open district tournament on Tuesday against an opponent yet to be determined. They currently are 9-4 and ranked No. 9 in the Class 1A Rating Percentage Index.
They lost their third straight, 19-15 at Flatirons Academy last Saturday, but got back on the winning track with a home sweep of Caliche this past Monday.
Otis took a 5-1 lead over Flatirons, last Saturday in Westminster. However, the Bison erupted for 13 runs in the third. Otis scored a total of 10 runs in it last two at-bats, but Flatirons also posted five in the fourth to hold off the Bulldogs.
Carter Wells had three hits with a double, two RBI and two runs for Otis, Mitchell Stivers two hits and two RBI, Kaleb Jones two hits, two RBI and one run, Peyton Wells two hits, one RBI and two runs, Paxton Davis two hits, one RBI and two runs, Austin Hornung two hits and two runs, Erick Thorn one hit and one run, Tayte Smith one double with one RBI and three runs, and JJ Ward two runs.
The Bulldogs got back to winning with a 7-2 and 9-8 sweep of Caliche on Monday.
Otis led 3-2 in the opener when it pushed across four in the fourth to secure the win. Smith had a two-run homer, C. Wells two hits, three RBI and two runs, Thorn two hits, one RBI and two runs, Stivers one hit and one run, Jones one hit and one run, Ward one hit and one RBI, and Hornung one hit.
The Bulldogs held on for a one-run win in the nightcap. They led 3-1 when Caliche scored five in the top of the fourth. Otis answered with four in the home half for an 8-6 lead. The Buffaloes tied it in the top of the fifth with two runs.
However, Otis won in a walkoff with one run in home half.
C. Wells had three hits, including a homer, with five RBI and three runs, Smith one hit, one RBI and two runs, Maddox Hisam one hit and one run, Jones one hit, Davis one run, and Thorn one hit and two runs.
Lone Star track
The Lone Star track and field athletes had a few placing efforts at the Wray Dick Evans Invitational on April 20.
Anderson Weathers placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.64 seconds. Grant Kuntz cleared 10-foot-10 for seventh in the pole vault, and Wyatt Cochran put the shot 39-1 for seventh.
Aleighcea Kuntz scored a point for the girls, placing eighth in the pole vault with a height of 7-4.
The Longhorns also were at the Broncos Stampede at Platte Valley High School in Kersey on Saturday.
Jade Kuntz placed second in the pole vault by clearing 7-11, and A. Kuntz was eighth at 6-11.
For the boys, G. Kuntz placed fourth in the triple jump at 38-3.25, and eighth in the pole vault at 10-11. Cochran placed eighth in the discus at 112-3.
Otis track
The Otis High School track and field athletes got themselves a handful of placing efforts at the Wray Dick Evans Invitational on April 20.
Peyton Wells led the way by winning the discus with a distance of 133-foot-10. Sawyer Packer was fifth in the triple jump at 36-11.5. Maddox Hisam cleared 5-7 for fifth in the high jump. Packer also went 18-4 in the long jump to place eighth.
Madelyn Willeke picked up two points for the girls by placing seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.42 seconds.
The Bulldogs had two placing efforts at the Broncos Stampede, Saturday at Platte Valley High School in Kersey. Packer took second in the triple jump with a distance of 38-8.5. For the girls, Willeke clered 7-5 for fifth in the pole vault.
Arickaree track
The Arickaree boys track and field team had a nice run at the Wray Dick Evans Invitational, last Thursday, April 20.
Jacob Jefferson won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 8.26 seconds, and won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.39 seconds.
Hayden page was second in the 400 in 55.33 seconds, and Bryce Shaffer eighth in 58.96.
The 4-by-800 team placed third with a time of 9:34.37.
