Otis High School’s highly-regarded football team will play its home opener Friday against Hi-Plains.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs opened their season last Friday at Deer Trail, cruising to a 58-6 win over the Eagles in head coach Brody Wood’s Otis debut.
The Bulldogs took care of business early, leading 48-0 by the end of the first quarter. They added 10 more points in the second quarter. Deer Trail had the only score in the second half.
Otis did all that scoring with only 172 yards of total offense. Tayte Smith ran for 56 yards and two touchdowns on three carries, Mitchell Stivers 41 yards and two touchdowns on four carries, Blake Stivers 36 yards and one score on three carries, Tayshaun Thomas 18 yards on two carries, Matthew Seward 12 yards on two carries, Malakye Reese eight yards and Emiliano Varela two. Austin Hornung competed two passes for 14 yards and two touchdowns. Charlie Kendrick and Thomas had the touchdown catches.
Defensively, Cambric Klinzmann was in on five tackles, Thomas four, Kendrick three, Hornung three, B. Stivers three, Gracen Bechtle three, Reese two, Smith two, and Gavin Price, Bechtle, Tristen Stivers and Seward one each.
ARICKAREE FOOTBALL
Arickaree’s football team is at Prairie today, September 5, after opening its season last week with a win at Eads.
The Bison claimed a 35-13 win in the opener. After a scoreless first quarter, Arickaree took a 21-7 a lead in the second. The Bison tacked on 14 points in the second half.
Austin Wright completed nine of 18 passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns, while Zarron Skubal completed his only pass for five yards. Skubal had four catches for 41 yards and a touchdown, Jorge Ramos three for 52 yards and a touchdown, Luis Machado three for 38 yards, and Dillon Noletubby had a 34-yard touchdown catch. Wright ran for 87 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, and Skubal had 10 yards on four carries.
Ramos led the defense with 15 total tackles, and also had two interceptions and one fumble recovery. Skubal was in on 14 tackles, Wright 13, Noletubby nine, Angel Palomo five, Machado four, and Daniel Goff two.
LONE STAR VOLLEYBALL
Lone Star’s volleyball team was 1-2 heading into this past Tuesday’s home match with neighboring Otis.
The Longhorns won in four sets at Caliche earlier last week, 18-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-23. Lone Star statistics were not available.
Lone Star hosted McClave on Saturday, losing in three sets, 12-25, 18-25, 21-25. Statistics were not available.
The Longhorns host Potter-Dix, Nebraska, today, September 5, and also host Bethune this weekend.
OTIS VOLLEYBALL
Otis High School’s volleyball team was 2-2 entering this past Tuesday’s match at neighboring Lone Star.
That was the Bulldogs’ YWKC League opener. They host Hi-Plains on Friday in another league match.
They opened their season earlier last week at Wray, winning 25-7, 26-24, 25-14. Madelyn Willeke had 19 kills, and Aedyn Tribelhorn 10. Crysten Goble led in setting assists with 24. Tribelhorn was 17-18 serving with four aces, Lydia Willeke 14-14, Layce Perry 11-11 with one ace, M. Willeke 10-10 with two aces, Karlye Bliven 10-11, and Goble 9-11 with two aces.
The Bulldogs went 1-2 in the NJC Tournament in Sterling on Saturday.
They first faced Class 2A powerhouse Merino, losing in three sets. Scores and statistics were not available. Next up was a four-set loss to Haxtun, 24-26, 18-25, 25-11, 28-30 in a thriller. Otis statistics were not available.
Otis closed out the day with a 30-28, 25-15, 25-17 win over Holyoke. Statistics were not available.
ARICKREE VOLLEYBALL
Arickaree’s volleyball team is sitting at 7-3 heading into a match at Prairie today, September 5.
The Bison are at a triangular in Burlington on Saturday.
They played at Eads last Thursday, losing in three sets, 18-25, 23-25, 25-27. Arickaree statistics were not available.
Arickaree then went 1-2 in the NJC Tournament on Saturday. First up was a loss to Fleming, 11-25, 19-25, 13-25. The Bison knocked off Holyoke in four sets, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, then finished the day with a 13-25, 10-25, 13-25 loss to Haxtun. Arickaree statistics were not available.
