The 2019-20 school year is coming to an end for Yuma students, though in a very peculiar manner.
Yuma students went on spring break in the middle of March just as the COVID-19 pandemic began to hit Colorado. It quickly became clear that in-school learning likely would not resume. Spring break was extended another week, and then Yuma-1 began remote learning, just as all other students in the region and throughout Colorado have done ever since.
It is now about to come to an end, not with a big bang of end-of-school celebrations, but with students simply finishing their final assignments, and turning in any Chromebooks or wifi hot spots that have been supplied by the school district.
The YHS Class of 2020 are finishing up their final assignments this week. Plans on what to do about any kind of graduation remain murky as school officials navigate if the pandemic will allow for a gathering at some point in the coming month or two. (Look for more on graduations in the accompanying article.)
All other YHS students are receiving their final assignments today, May 7. Students who need additional time to complete missing assignments have from May 6-19. Grades will be finalized on May 20.
Yuma Middle School students are getting their final instruction today, May 7. Students then have until 4 p.m. on Friday, May 15, to catch up on any missing assignments.
It then will be time to turn in textbooks, borrowed computers and hot spots, and any other school materials.
Collection of materials will be at the YMS gym, commons area doors. Please stay in your vehicle and staff will collect the materials from your vehicle.
Thursday, May 14, from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m.
Monday, May 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1to 3 p.m.
Grades 5 and 6 need to return reading books from Mrs. Hemphill and Mrs. Yost’s classes.
Grades 7 and 8 need to return all Math, Science, and Language Arts books, reading books from Rahe and Inouye’s classes.
Wrestlers need to turn headgear, uniforms, knee pads, shoes, wrestling bags, anything else that belongs to the school.
All grades 5-8 need to return borrowed hotspots, computers and chargers.
YMS will be holding a reverse parade on Monday, May 18 from 5 to 6 p.m. for all students. The teachers will be lined up on Elm Street and would love to see you drive by to close out the school year.
Eighth-grade promotion will not be held this year. Promotion certificates will be printed and sent to the students at a later date.
Final instruction for Morris Elementary School students, grades K-4, also will be today, May 7.
