It is now official, there will be changes to Class 2A baseball, as well as in some other sports and classifications that impact local schools.
The CHSAA Legislative Council met virtually on Friday. The council voted on more than 50 items.
Among those was approval of the changes to 2A baseball, as reported in the Pioneer last week. The classification no longer will have district tournaments, instead allowing teams to schedule 23 regular-season games, followed by a 32-team regional bracket.
All teams will qualify for the bracket based on the Ratings Percentage Index standings, and seeded by the RPI. The top eight seeds will host four-team regionals.
The regional winners then will advance to a new-look state tournament — an eight-team single-elimination bracket.
Also in baseball, 1A teams will have to play a minimum of 12 games to be eligible to qualify for the postseason. The game minimum in 2A will be 17.
Class 1A volleyball is moving from districts to regionals. All teams will have to play a minimum of 18 matches against member schools and varsity opponents in order to qualify for the postseason.
Girls wrestling will use the same weight classes that were used in the pilot season.
The state spirit championships will move to a three-day format beginning this year. Schools will only be able to participate in one cheer category and one dance category at the state championships. Cheer and dance are now considered separate sports.
While no regional schools have a boys volleyball team, it should be noted it will have one classification during its inaugural season in spring 2021.
