Things seem to keep falling into place for the Yuma High School cross country teams.
Both the boys and girls teams continue to have very strong seasons, following another quality effort at the Platte Valley Invitational last Friday.
And now even YHS having to go to remote learning until the end of the month, and two-thirds of the student body under quarantine, along with several staff members, does not impact the cross country teams’ schedule. The Indians just so happen to have a break anyway, not having a meet again until October 3 at Wiggins.
The updated Colorado Mile Split coaches poll now has the girls team ranked No. 3 in Class 2A, and the boys are ranked No. 4
“We just have to keep grinding,” coach Robert Zahller said in a text.
Enough runners on both teams avoided the initial quarantine, determined by contact tracing after YHS’s first COVID-19 case was announced last Wednesday, to send full teams to Kersey, last Friday.
Both made the most of it.
The girls finished third with 82 points, behind only University with 42, and Strasburg with 57. Eaton, Byers and Greeley Central finished behind the Indians in the team scores.
Freshman Ashley Ibanez led the Indians by placing sixth with a time of 24 minutes, 14.25 seconds. Sophomore Hailey Eyring was eighth in 24:35.03. Junior Meidi Reyes stepped in at 18th with a time of 26:51.94, followed by sophomore Nuvia Vega placing 25th in 28:52.43. Freshman Caddis Robinson rounded out the team scoring by placing 30th in 30:23.63.
Yuma’s boys finished fourth in the team scores with 76. Greeley Central won the boys title with 33 points, Eaton second with 52, Byers third with 65, and Strasburg finished behind Yuma with 107.
Sophomore Javier Duran was the top placer for the Indians, finishing seventh in 19:49.41. Sophomore Jesus Ross was 12th in 20:43.48. Junior Jaxson Lungwitz was close behind in 14th with a time of 21:08.19. Junior Yahir Trejo was 27th in 22:43.62, and freshman Ruben Vega 30th in 23:37.43.
Both Yuma teams competed without some of their top runners.
