Yuma High School’s boys basketball team broke into the win column in a big way, cruising to a 91-48 win over Holyoke, Friday night in the Tribe’s Lower Platte Activities Association opener in The Pit.
It was the most points Yuma’s boys had scored in years, most likely since the early 1990s. Veteran coach Dave Sheffield said it was the most points any of his teams had ever scored.
The onslaught came courtesy of Sheffield opening up the bench, substituting early and often after keeping to a tight six- to seven-man rotation during an 0-3 start.
The result was Yuma threw wave after wave of quickness and pressure at the Dragons, with defense creating plenty of offense.
Yuma quickly ran out to a 14-7 lead. Sophomore Forest Rutledge made four 3-pointers spanning late in the first and early in the second quarters as the Indians opened up a 37-20 lead. Holyoke stuck around the rest of the quarter, but the Indians still led 49-35 at halftime
The Indians really began pouring it on in the second half. Five different players scored in the third as Yuma went up 68-43, and six players scored in the fourth as the Indians pushed the lead to over 40.
Holyoke entered the game with a 2-2 record, having lost by one point to the same Brush squad that beat Yuma by four in the season opener.
However, Friday’s version of the Indians looked completely different.
Unofficially, 11 players scored for the Indians. Javier Gamboa, unofficially, had 21 points, Clay Robinson 19, Rutledge 16, Cade Morton six, Javier Duran six, Beau Tate six, Jesus Ross six, Jaxson Lungwitz four, Damon Thornton four, Andre Baucke two and Jonathan Carillo two. Lane Remmich also played quality minutes.
The Indians will look to improve to 2-0 in LPAA play when they play Sedgwick County in Julesburg, Saturday at approximately 4 p.m.
