Yuma High School’s boys basketball team cruised to its sixth straight victory, 87-45 over Akron Thursday night in The Pit.
The Indians scored 61 points in the first half while improving to 6-0 in Lower Platte Activities Association play, 6-3 overall, heading into Saturday afternoon’s nonleague game at Burlington. Akron fell to 0-6 in the LPAA and 2-7 overall.
The first-half barrage has to be one of the most, if not the most, points in the long history of YHS boys basketball.
Yuma scored the first 16 points, and was up 27-7 by the end of the first quarter.
Then came the 34-point second quarter, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers by Jesus Ross and Cade Morton, for a 61-19 halftime lead. The scoring slowed in the second half as the bench was emptied, and a running clock was employed in the fourth.
Yuma shot a torrid 56 percent from long range, making 14 of 25 three-point attempts, and also shot 56 percent overall. Ironically, the Indians shot only 39 percent at the charity stripe, making just seven of 18. A total of seven players knocked down a 3-pointer, led by Ross making four of six, Clay Robinson four of seven, and Forest Rutledge with two.
