Top-ranked Wray hands Yuma second team loss

The top-ranked Wray High School wrestling team flexed its muscles in dispatching county-rival Yuma, 44-15, Thursday night in the Eagles Nest.

Yuma entered the annual showdown with just one team loss in this dual-only Season B, and was looking to give the Eagles a scare like the Indians did last year in The Pit.

However, Wray is looking to add to its fourth straight Class 2A team championship next month, and showed Thursday night it definitely has what it takes.
Yuma won only three of 12 matches – the Indians forfeited at 106 and there was a double forfeit at 113 — two by fall.
The first came at 132 pounds, where senior Braden Smith finally got the pin of Dillon Schmidt with nine seconds left in the match.

Fellow senior Blaze Brophy followed that up with a second-period pin of Koy Smith at 138 pounds.
That left the Indians trailing 19-12, giving hope of making it interesting again.
However, Wray won the next four matches to build a 38-12 lead.
Kevin Hermosillo got Yuma back in the winner’s circle with a 12-7 decision over Jake Johnson at 182, but then Wray closed out the dual with two more wins.
