A beautiful early May day was the backdrop for the opening the track and field Season D, Tuesday as Yuma High School hosted the Bill Kalb Invitational.
The YHS teams made the most of the opportunity, as the boys won their team title, and a shorthanded girls team finished fifth in the 16-school field.
It was the first meet since 2019.
Yuma’s boys cruised to the team title with 107.5 points. Sedgwick County was second with 79, Sterling third with 73.5, Wiggins and Wray tied for fourth with 71, and Holyoke sixth with 69.
Wray and Sterling tied for the girls team title with 93 points each, while Heritage Christian had 79, Bennett 75, and Yuma 57 to round out the top five. (Yuma is missing several key team members who are still playing volleyball.)
Clay Robinson led the Yuma boys by winning the 100-meter dash in 11.74 seconds, and the 200 in 23.38. Alex Lozano was fifth in the 200 in 24.86 seconds.
Beau Tate was second in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.64 seconds, and third in the 110 hurdles in 17.53 seconds. Nash Richardson was sixth in the 300s in 47.16.
Yuma’s boys won the 4-by-200 relay in 1:35.44, the 4-by-400 in 3:45.71, and the 4-by-800 in 9:52.47. The 4-by-100 team was third in 47.49 seconds.
In the field events, Braden Smith cleared 12-foot-1 for second in the pole vault, while Kail Cooper was fourth at 11-7, and Richardson sixth at 10-7. Jaxson Lungwitz was second in the triple jump with a distance of 38-6.5, and Richardson sixth at 34-0.25. Jesus Ross went 17-1.25 for fourth in the long jump.
Abril Montes de Oca cleared 4-0 for fourth in the high jump, and Glanz was fifth at 3-9. Nuvia Vega long jumped 13-3 for third. Duran cleared 7-1 for third in the pole vault.
The 800 sprint medley team placed second with a time of 2:05.27.
Yuma’s next meet is May 14 at Akron.

The Otis and Lone Star track and field teams made their Season D debuts Tuesday at the Yuma Bill Kalb Invitational.
With the Otis girls still playing volleyball, it was just the boys who scored Tuesday, finishing 10th in the 16-school field with 18 points.
Maddox Hisam cleared 5-foot-2 for fourth in the high jump. Tyler Johnson long jumped 17-0.5 for fifth. Peyton Wells whipped the discus 116-6 for fifth place, and put the shot 38-6.75 for seventh. Otis’ 4-by-200 relay team was sixth in 1:49.75.
Lone Star’s girls finished 10th in the 16-school field with 27 points.
Lamya Kuntz won the pole vault by clearing 9-foot-1, and Andrea Kuntz was second at 8-7, and Aleighcea Kuntz eighth at 6-7. Leah Kubitz finished sixth in the 100 hurdles in 20.93 seconds. The 800 sprint medley team placed fourth with a time of 2:12.24.
The Lone Star boys scored 12 points to finish 13th in the team standings.
Brady Kuntz cleared 12-1 for second in the pole vault. Mahiro Yamamoto was eighth in the long jump with a distance of 16-8.25. The 4-by-100 relay team placed fifth in 50.26 seconds.
