Yuma High School’s baseball team went back to Akron, Wednesday night, to finish a season-opening sweep of the Rams.
The Indians traveled to Akron for the Season D debut, Tuesday afternoon. They held a 12-6 lead in the first game after 5-1/2 innings when inclement weather moved in. It led to the schools deciding to resume play Wednesday, finishing the first game before continuing on to the nightcap.
Yuma is at Caliche for one varsity game on Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by a JV game. The Indians are at Merino for another LPAA doubleheader on Tuesday, weather permitting.
Up until the weather delay, Yuma had 12 runs on eight hits, and had benefited from six Akron errors, though the Indians also had four fielding miscues.
Yuma scored first when Kobe Rayl drew a walk and eventually scored on an error in the top of the first. Akron led 2-1 when the Indians pushed across three runs on just one hit in the second, with Angel Escobar, Cade Morton and Rayl scoring.
Kevin Hermosillo, who had a hit in each of his first four at-bats, and Escobar singled and scored in the third, and John Smith walked and scored in the third for a 7-3 lead. Three more runs came in the fourth, including Rayl’s two-run double, scoring Smith and Morton. Hermosillo also walked and scored in the inning.
Jose Ruiz and Andre Baucke both reached base in the fifth. Ruiz scored on an error, and Baucke scored on a single by either Hermosillo or Escobar, who both had a hit in the inning.
Action resumed Wednesday in the bottom of the fifth, when Akron pushed across two. The Indians added three in the top of the seventh. Hugo Montes, courtesy running for Andre Baucke, scored on Escobar’s single. Escobar scored on an error, and Smith singled then scored on Rayl’s two-out single, for a 15-6 lead.
Akron made it interesting with four runs in the home half, thanks to a series of base on balls, but the Indians held on for the win.
Hermosillo was 4-for-5 and scored two runs, Escobar 3-for-4, three runs and three RBI, Rayl two hits, including a double, two runs and three RBI, Yahir Trejo one RBI, Victor Perez one RBI, Ruiz one RBI and one run, Hugo Montes one run as the courtesy runner for Baucke, Morton one hit, one RBI and two runs, and Smith one hit and three runs.
Trejo went four innings on the hill for Yuma for the win. He struck out three, walked two and allowed four hits. All four Akron runs against him were unearned. Escobar struck out one and walked three in one inning, Ruiz four strike outs and seven walks,alloing four earned runs, over 1-2/3 innings, and Smith got the game’s last out.
The Tribe then cruised to a 19-1 win in five innings in the nightcap. Yuma broke it open with five runs in the second, including a double by Cade Morton. He scored, along with Rayl, Trejo, Perez and Hermosillo.
Triples by Perez and Hermosillo sparked a seven-run fourth, and the Indians pushed across five more in the fifth. Akron’s sole run came in the second.
Connor Lynch went the first four innings on the hill for the pitching win. The lefty allowed one run on two hits, walking four, and striking out two. Rayl threw the last inning, striking out one.
Morton had two hits, including a double, with two RBI and scoring three runs, Trejo two hits, including a double with two RBI and one run, Ruiz two hits, three RBI and one run, Perez one triple, one RBI and three runs, Hermosillo one triple, four runs and one RBI, Rayl one hit, one RBI and two runs, Baucke one hit, one run and one RBI, Escobar one hit and two runs, and Smith one hit, two runs and one RBI.
