Yuma High School’s cross country runners no doubt hope to compete in more comfortable conditions when they hit the course at the Brighton Meet today, September 16.
The Indians ran in Fort Morgan last Friday. The meet’s start was pushed back 30 minutes due to the heat, but the temperature still was in the mid-90s when the races began.
Still, the Indians and everyone else powered through, and Yuma came home with some pretty good efforts.
Yuma’s boys ran themselves into a sixth-place team finish with 143 points, out of 11 schools with enough runners to post a team score. Conifer won the boys team title with 44 points. 
Javier Duran paced the Tribe, finishing a strong 10th with a time of 18 minutes, 39.4 seconds. Angel Escobar was 25th in 19:59.3, Mely Gonzalez 29th in 20:16.3, Jaxson Lungwitz 31st in 20:34.7. Liam McClaran was 73r4d in 22:29.8, Jaime Montanez 91st in 24:05, Diego Gutierrez 115th in 30:10, and Angel Ibarra 119th in 35:53.3.
Yuma’s girls also had enough varsity runners to post a team score, finishing fifth with 100 points. Fort Morgan won the girls title with 50 points. A total of six schools had enough runners to post a team score.
Hailey Eyring led the way once again, placing eighth in 22:45.2. Yuma had two top-10 finishes as Ashley Ibanez was 10th with at ime of 23:04.1. Fatima Duran was 29th in 25:37.2, Myke McDonald 42nd in 27:18.9, Gabriela Varela 52nd in 28:46, Alyssa Roberts 56th in 29:37.6, and Wendy Garcia 69th in 32:41.6.
