The postseason has arrived for the Yuma High School girls wrestlers.
The Indians will be competing at regional in Fort Lupton, Friday and Saturday. Girls wrestling has gained so much in popularity this season that regionals and state have been expanded to two days.
Fort Lupton is one of three regional sites; Chatfield and Douglas County high schools being the other two. There is only one classification statewide, so Yuma is mixed in with schools of all sizes.
Joining the Indians at Fort Lupton will be Bennett, Brush, Fort Lupton, Horizon, Legacy, Loveland, Mead, Mountain Range, Northglenn, Northridge, Platte Valley, Poudre, Prairie View, Riverdale Ridge, Rocky Mountain, Severance, Skyview, Thornton, and Wiggins.
The top five in each weight will advance to next week’s state tournament at Thornton High School.
Competing for Yuma will be Maci Daugherty at 100 pounds, Ashley Marshall at 105, Fatima Duran at 111, Ximena Garcia at 118, Abril Montes de Oca at 127, Alejandra Barron at 136, Eva Ruiz at 161 and Mia Dischner at 185.
Coach Rory Lynch said he expects Dischner and Duran to get decent seeds at their weights, but expects the others to have difficult first-round matches.
“We will have to wrestle very tough to get to the placing rounds, but our girls have shown that they can do that,” he said. “We have wrestled some very salty opponents in the last three weeks and as they say, ‘Iron Sharpens Iron.’”
