There might be enough candidates for a Yuma City Council race in the April 7 municipal election, but it will not be determined until Monday, February 3.
This past Monday, January 27, was the deadline to turn in nomination petitions. Incumbent Ron Swehla was the only candidate to successfully turn in his petition. There also are four candidates for four open seats on the council, incumbents Dan Baucke and Bryson Chrismer, along with Tim McClung and Jo Griggs.
However, there were others who had some issues with their petitions, and they are given until Monday, February 3, to “cure” their petition.
The council also is considering putting a lodging tax question on the ballot. The council likely will take action on that during its next meeting, February 4.
The April 7 election will be a mail-in ballot election, per the council’s consensus at last week’s meeting. The council was told a mail-in election costs more, but there is better participation.
