The Yuma High School track and field teams will look to keep the good times rolling in two meets in the coming days.
Yuma’s boys and girls teams both finished second in the team standings at the Weld Central Rebel Round Up, last Friday in Keenesburg.
The Indians now are at the Eaton Invitational on Saturday before hosting the Yuma Bill Kalb Invitational on Tuesday. The list of schools coming to the Yuma meet still was not complete at press time, but “The Kalber” annually draws a strong field.
Weather conditions were not ideal last Friday, but the YHS athletes still came up with strong efforts.
The boys scored 139.5 points, second only to Elizabeth’s 165. Sterling was a distant third with 81 pints, while Platte Canyon had 62, and Strasburg 53 to round out the top five
Yuma’s girls had 112 points for second place behind Elizabeth’s 172. The Indians barely edged Sterling, which had 111 points, while Strasburg, 107, and Weld Central, 84, rounded out the top five.
“When it’s cold and windy like it was at the beginning of the Weld Central meet, it’s hard to get into a competitive mindset, but our kids went out and did their best,” head coach Lucas Lubbers said. “We still saw some pretty good times for the weather.”
Beau Tate swept the hurdle races, winning the 110 meters in 16.88 seconds and the 300 meters in 43.41 seconds, while Nash Bridges was second in the 300 in 44.41 seconds.
Clay Robinson was second in the 100 dash in 11.19 seconds, Alex Lozano second in the 200 in 24.07 seconds, Daman Hernandez second in the 400 in 54.75 seconds, and Kevin Orona eighth in the 800 in 2 minutes, 33.68 seconds.
The Indians picked up points in all four relays.
The 4-by-200 team of Hernandez, Jonathan Carrillo, Richardson and Kevin Hermosillo, placed second in 1:39.06. The foursome of Jesus Ross, Tate, Jaxson Lungwitz and Hernandez was third in the 4-by-400 in 3:58.66. The 4-by-800 team of Orona, Ruben Vega, Fynn Sims and Mely Gonzalez finished fourth in 10:55.42. Yuma was fifth in the 4-by-100 as Lozano, Ross, Hermosillo and Carrillo ran it in 47.76 seconds.
Lungwitz hopped, skipped and jumped 42-foot-2.25 to win the triple jump. Hernandez won the long jump with a leap of 19-4.5, and Lozano was a close second at 19-4.
Richardson cleared 10-0 for second in the pole vault, while Bridger Lynch was fourth at 9-0, and Jack Blecha and Trey Stegman each cleared 8-6 to place sixth and seventh, respectively.
Hermosillo whipped the discus 113-3 for third place, and Forest Rutledge was fourth at 109-10. Hermosillo also was fourth in the shot put with a heave of 39-0. Orona and Damien Kosinski both cleared 4-10 to place fourth and sixth, respectively, in the high jump.
The Yuma girls also racked up points in all the disciplines.
Relays were a big boost to the cause.
The 800 sprint medley foursome of Fatima Duran, Caddis Robinson, Ashley Ibanez and Lea Richardson posted a first-place time of 2:00.54. The 4-by-100 team of Duran, Robinson, Lyndsey Mekelburg and Richardson took second in 54.9 seconds. Jade Lungwitz, Ibanez, Hailey Eyring and Richardson took second in the 4-by-400 in 4:31.22. The 4-by-200 team of Mekelburg, Robinson, Ibanez and Richardson took third in 1:58.55.
In the open races, Mekelburg was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.82 seconds, and Liddy Day was sixth in 19.64. Braylynn Armstrong was fifth in the 300 hurdles in 56.25 seconds. Samantha Wells was fourth in the 400 in 1:13.43. Eyring took fourth in the 1600-meter run in 6:29.57. Myka McDonald was fourth in the 3200 in 15:26.24, and Alyssa Roberts sixth in 17:14.43. Ajanay Aragon took sixth in the 100 dash in 14.29 seconds.
Field events were strong as Wells whipped the discus 91-3 for second place. Abril Montes de Oca cleared 4-4 for second in the high jump, and Jordan Glanz was fifth at the same height. Mekelburg triple jumped 31-4 for third place, while Armstrong was fifth at 30-8.75, and Lungwitz seventh at 29-10. Duran cleared 8-0 for third in the pole vault, while Montes de Oca was fourth at 7-0, and Chloe Smith sixth at 5-6.
