Unofficial results show that three incumbents and one challenger have been elected to terms on the Yuma City Council.
The mail-in ballot municipal election season came to end this past Tuesday, April 5, at 7 p.m. The unofficial results were posted in the front window of City Hall by about nine. The election results will become official Friday, April 15
Initial results show that incumbent Marylu Smith-Dischner received the 
most votes with 413, followed closely by Terri Frame, who was appointed to an opening last fall, receiving 400. Challenger Jerome Benish was third with 313 votes.
Those three will begin three-year terms when the new council is seated during the April 19 meeting.
The terms are shorter than the usual four years as the city is moving council elections to the November cycle beginning in 2025. The final April municipal election will be in 2024.
Marc Shay, the current mayor pro-tem, earned the two-year term with 256 votes, barely edging current council member Daniel Ebersole, who received 245, according to the unofficial results. Challengers Zane McMeekin received 163 votes, Dana Olsen Josh 153, and Shannon Scholefield 117.
Voter turnout was surprisingly low, considering the widespread harping about Yuma’s municipal government — particularly on social media — and a ballot featuring eight diverse candidates for electors to consider. The total of 579 ballots were cast by Tuesday’s 7 p.m. deadline represented just 34 percent of Yuma’s registered electors.
