It has been a rough go for the Yuma High School baseball team, over the past week.
Yuma will be looking to tighten it up on defense and offense as it plays a single varsity game, followed by JV, Saturday at Wray. The former Indians then have a home doubleheader against Wiggins on Tuesday.
Yuma beat Wray in an 8-7 walkoff win last Tuesday, April 18, but lost their next four to drop to 4-9.
Yuma’s defense fell into a serious funk after the Wray game, committing 10 errors in a 16-13 loss at Highland in Ault, last Thursday, and did more of the same in 15-1 and 14-4 home losses sunny but cold windswept Saturday.
Yuma scored four runs in the top of the first at Highland. However, the Huskies led 10-5 by the end of the third.
Yuma battled back with three runs in the fourth.
The former Indians then plated five runs in the top of the sixth to tie the score at 13. However, Highland scored three in the home half, and Yuma could not score in the top of the seventh.
Yuma actually outhit the Huskies, 11-8. Neither team was sharp defensively as Yuma had the 10 errors, and Highland committed six. Walks were fairly even, but Yuma struck out 11 times, compared to seven for Highland.
Reyli Trejo went 5-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and three runs. Ethan Gonzales had two doubles, with three RBI, Victor Perez a two-run triple and one run, Angel Escobar one hit and three runs, Silas Baucke a one-run triple and two runs, and Carson Lynch one hit, one RBI and one run.
Trejo, Hugo Montes and Gonzales all took turns on the hill for Yuma.
Yuma finally was back home Saturday for two against Akron. Unfortunately, the Rams put it to the home team.
Yuma committed seven errors as the Rams methodically built on its lead. They finally put the game away with six runs in the sixth to finish the game one inning early. Yuma’s lone run came in the fourth, when Marvin Duarte scored on Lynch’s single. Baucke also hit a double.
Baucke took the pitching loss. He struck out seven and walked three through 4-1/3 innings. Only three of the nine runs against him were earned runs. Escobar went the final 1-2/3, with only two of the six runs scored against him being earned runs.
The nightcap saw Yuma go down in five innings, 14-4.
It was all offense early as Akron scored six in the top of the first, and Yuma answered with three in the home half.
However, Akron kept adding on runs while Yuma plated just one more the rest of the game, despite being outhit just 11-8. The defense was tighter as it committed just two errors.
Escobar had three hits for Yuma with a triple and two runs, Brody Sheffield two hits, one RBI and one run, Trejo one hit and one RBI, Jonathan Thomson one hit, and Baucke one hit, one RBI and one run.
Montes and Trejo shared time on the hill, with Montes taking the pitching loss.
Yuma still entered this week at No. 16 in the Class 2A Rating Percentage Index.
Tuesday’s rescheduled home game against Sterling was delayed a bit this past Tuesday afternoon due to the weather.
It ended up being another rough one for Yuma, losing 23-1 in three innings.
Yuma’s lone score came in the first inning when Escobar scored, as Trejo got the RBI. Escobar and Lynch each had a hit. Sterling scored 11 in the second and 10 in the third.
