Yuma High School’s track and field teams are nearing the end of the regular season.
Yuma hosts the HWAY Meet on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
Yuma competed in back-to-back meets last week, getting home late Friday from the Haxtun Relays held in Holyoke, then up early the next morning for the Tom Meyer Akron Invitational. Plus, the Yuma student-athletes competed in less events than usual Saturday as many needed to get back to Yuma for the school prom.
The Yuma teams had a good Friday in cold and windy conditions at the Haxtun Relays.
Yuma’s boys won the team title with 146 points, with Holyoke coming in second with 137.
The girls finished third with 113 points. Merino won the girls title with 156, while Wray had 142.
The boys did it with depth, led by Nash Richardson being a double winner. He claimed the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.66 seconds, and won the 300 hurdles in 44.37 seconds. Bridger Lynch was third in both hurdles, in 17.76 seconds and 45.43 seconds. Edwin Munoz was fourth in the 110s in 17.81, and fifth in the 300s in 46.54. Jayden Serl took eighth in the 110s in 25.53 seconds.
Jiovani Perez was second in the 400 in 56.93 seconds, Kevin Orona fourth in 58.88, and Liam McClaran fifth in 58.99. Daman Hernandez took fifth in the 100 dash in 11.79 seconds. McClaran was fourth in the 800 in 2:21.34, and Hugo Olivas fifth in 2:21.84.
The 4-by-400 team took second in 3:32.65.
In the field events, Forest Rutledge shipped the discus 127-0 for second, and Cesar Varela was seventh at 106-2. Rutledge was third in the shot put at 38-6.26.
Jack Blecha cleared 11-10 for second in the pole vault, while Richardson was third at the same eight, Lynch fifth at the same height, and Perez sixth at 11-4.
Cristian Duarte long jumped 18-8.5 for second, Alex Lozano 17-8 for sixth, and Javier Duran 17-2.5 for seventh.
Munoz cleared 5-9 for third in the high jump, while Duarte was sixth at 5-3, and Jesus Ross eighth at 5-1. Richardson triple jumped 36-3.25 for fifth.
The girls also got it done with top efforts from all over.
Lea Richardson placed second in the 100 in 12.95 seconds, Caddis Robinson third in 13.42, and Jayleen Loya fifth in 13.63. Robinson was second in the 200 in 27.91 seconds, and Carolina Ross sixth in 29.57. Lyndsey Mekelburg was third in the 100 hurdles in 18.35 seconds, Braylynn Armstrong fifth in 19.42, and Jordan Glanz seventh in 20.61. Armstrong took fifth in the 300 hurdles in 57.54 seconds, and Glanz seventh in 1:01.03. Gemma Oestman ran the 400 in 1:15.02 to place sixth.
The 4-by-400 relay team placed second in 4:19.46.
In the field events, Mekelburg was second in the long jump at 14-7, Ross fourth at 14-4, and Emma Rayl sixth at 12-6. Mekelburg was second in the triple jump with a distance of 30-7.25, Armstrong third at 29-10, Jade Lungwitz fourth at 29-5.25, and Rayl seventh at 28-6.
Chloe Smith cleared 8-4 for second in the pole vault, and Abril Montes de Oca was third at 7-10.
Yuma was back at it the next day at the Tom Meyer Akron Invitational.
The girls team did not run any relays due to availability, but still had several placing performances.
Mekelburg won the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.95 seconds. Armstrong was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 56.78 seconds, and Glanz seventh in 1:02.81. Robinson place fourth in the 100 dash in 13.24 seconds.
Glanz cleared 4-8 for third in the high jump. Mekelburg went 13-7.5 for fourth in the long jump. Armstrong was fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 28-11.5, and Lungwitz sixth at 28-5.25. Smith cleared 7-6 for eighth in the pole vault.
The boys had a good run in three relays. The 4-by-200 team took first in 1:36.95. The 4-by-100 foursome placed second in 46.38 seconds. Yuma also placed second in the 4-by-800 with a time of 9:48.36.
The only placers in the open races came in the relays. Lynch was second in the 110 hurdles in 17.44 seconds, and Munoz fifth in 18.12. Munoz also was fifth in the 300s in 49.62 seconds.
Duarte went off in the high jump, clearing 6-0 to win the event. Munoz was fifth at 5-4, and Jack Blecha seventh at 5-2. Duarte was fourth in the long jump at 18-4.5. Jonathan Carrillo placed eighth in the triple jump at 35-1.75.
In the throws, Rutledge was second in the discus with a toss of 121-0, and eighth in the shot put at 37-4.
