The local commencement exercise season will come to an end this weekend.
Yuma High School’s Class of 2023 held its graduation before a full house in The Pit, last Sunday afternoon.
A total of 57 graduates walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Several were the first in their family to graduate from high school, and were briefly recognized during the ceremony, as were the students have have received scholarships that total more than $180,000.
Class President Liddy Day, and Cum Laude graduates Ally Mermis and Lyndsey Mekelburg all gave speeches. Dean of Students Dave Sheffield was the guest speaker.
Mermis and Mekelburg graduated with a grade point average of 4.0 and above. Graduating with High Distinction (3.8 and above) were Liddy Day, Alejandra Eduardo Nunez, and Olivia Cullen. Graduating with Honors (3.5 to 3.79) were Ariande Estrada, Forest Rutledge, Cesar Varela, Lea Richardson, Jesus Ross, Shannon Galloway, Ana Hernandez, Kaylee Farmer, Ashley Marshall, Abraham Lopez and Christian Gallagher.
Otis and Liberty will wrap up the commencement season this weekend.
The Otis graduation will be Friday at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. There are 11 graduates in the Class of 2023 — Jack Willeke, Rowan Tribelhorn, Aidan Blackwell, Arlene Bencomo, Destiny Henderson, Hailey Stivers, Maddox Hisam, Peyton Wells, Rebecca Gardner, Sakari Shields and Taylor Ringlein.
Liberty will have its graduation Sunday at 1 p.m. in the school’s gym. There are three graduating in 2023 — Caleb Foose, Logan Breyer and Tonya Rothbauer.
