The Yuma High School boys golf varsity team is nearly done with the regular season.
The league tournament on September 26 in Sterling wraps up the regular season, followed by regional a few days later.
The Outlaws have been plenty busy over the past week.
They competed in the Frontier Academy at Boomerang Golf Course in Greeley last Wednesday. They ended up finishing in seventh place with a 271, one shot ahead of Liberty Common. JJ Ward had to withdraw due to illness, but the other three played very well, coach Benjamin Weathers said.
Freshman Alexander Weathers led the team with an 86, while senior Brodie Castillo was right behind with an 87. Senior Will Noble came in with a 98, and made a couple of clutch putts at the end to vault the team into seventh.
The golfers went to the Burlington Invitational last Friday. Weathers said it lasted more than seven hours, the longest in his 10 years as coach. Brodie and Castillo were out with illness, but the Outlaws still finished fourth with a team score of 275. Weathers shot an 87 to finish sixth, Noble 91, Parker Dressel 97 and Noah Hansen 126. Coach Weathers said the golfers ran low on energy toward the end despite drinking a lot of fluid, and eating sandwiches snacks.
The varsity enjoyed one of its best tournaments of the season this past Monday at the Sterling Invitational at Sky Ranch. The Outlaws finished 13th in the 30-team field with a score of 263. Ward shot an 87, Castillo and Noble both 88, and Dressel 104. Noble and Ward each chipped in from off the green.
JV
Yuma competed in the Liberty Knights JV Tournament last week. The sandy greens at Kirk are faster than the players are used to, but they still played well. Dressel was top medalist with an 88, while Carter Benish had a 93, Orly Lynch 11, Michael Sporing 115 and Charlie Oestman 118.
JV golfers also played in Burlington, where Benish shot a 105, Lynch 106, and Oestman 122.
The JV played at Riverview in Sterling this past Monday. Benish shot a 98, Lynch 103, Oestman 130 and Sporing 133.
