Linda Lea Vasenius, age 80, of Cumming, Georgia, passed away on December 29th at Northside Hospital in Canton, Georgia. Linda was a kind, thoughtful, and genuinely curious person, deeply interested in those around her. Her authenticity and compassionate nature made her a beloved friend, family member, and community member. She is survived by her life partner of 27 years, Neil Benson; her son Derek Piper, daughter-in-law Gladys Piper, and granddaughter Sierra Piper all of Cumming, Georgia; and her sister Leta Smith of Joes, Colorado. She was predeceased by her sister Nina Stulp and her parents Clyde and Fern Dunafon of Yuma, Colorado.
Linda was born and raised on a farm graduating high school in nearby Yuma, Colorado, earning her Bachelor’s at the University of Northern Colorado, and eventually went on to earn a Master’s in Library Science from the University of Denver. A lifelong lover of books, Linda dedicated much of her professional life to library services. She served in leadership roles at libraries in Greeley, Westminster, and Loveland in Colorado and, at one point, oversaw the children’s libraries for the entire Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area. In recent years, she continued to share her passion for reading by actively participating in the local public libraries, and in various clubs including the Ladies of the Court Book Club where her enthusiasm for literature shone brightly.
When she wasn’t reading or involved in social activities, Linda loved to travel, cook, and spend time with her family. Her sense of adventure took her to many places, and she cherished the memories created with those she loved along the way. Whether hosting weekly family gatherings or preparing meals or treats for friends, Linda’s creations were a source of joy to those around her. Her kitchen was always filled with warmth, and her dishes were made with the same care and love she gave to every part of her life. Above all, Linda’s family was her greatest treasure, and she was always there for them, offering support, laughter, and unconditional love.
A memorial service will be held what would have been two days before her 81st birthday at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 18th, at the Cumming First United Methodist Church in Cumming, Georgia where Linda was an active long-time member. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cumming First United Methodist Church.
