1A hoops: NCL/YWKC Tournament in Sterling

The NCL/YWKC Tournament is wrapping up the regular season for northeast Colorado’s Class 1A teams.

The girls quarterfinals and round robin games got it going Monday at NJC in Sterling. In the round robin games, Lone Star beat Peetz 63-25, and Weldon Valley beat Bethune 39-28. Weldon Valley will play Peetz and Lone Star will play Bethune on Friday, the former at NJC and the latter at Sterling High School. Round robin will wrap up Saturday with Bethune playing Peetz in the Tigers Den, and Lone Star playing Weldon Valley in Wally Post. All games Friday and Saturday are at 11 a.m.

In the eighth-team tournament bracket, Otis lost to Briggsdale, Idalia beat Prairie, Fleming beat Arickaree,and Hi-Plains topped Caliche. Friday’s semifinals are at NJC with Idalia and Briggsdale playing at 2 p.m, and Fleming taking on Peetz at 5. The consolation semifinals are in Wally Post at Sterling High School, Otis playing Prairie at 2, and Arickaree taking on Caliche at 5. On Saturday, the seventh-place game is at 2 p.m. in the Tigers’ Den, fifth place at 5 p.m. in Tigers’ Den, third place at 2 p.m. in Wally Post, and championship at 5 p.m. in Wally Post.

Boys action began Tuesday in Sterling at NJC. The tournament quarterfinals had Otis playing Fleming, Lone Star taking on Prairie, Peetz playing Idalia, and Arickree against Caliche. The semifinals will Friday at NJC at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. The consolation semifinals are Friday in Wally Post at Sterling High School on Friday at the same times. It wraps up Saturday at SHS. The seventh-place game is 3:30 p.m. in the Tigers’ Den, fifth place 6:30 p.m. in Tigers’ Den, third place 3:30 p.m. in Wally Post, and championship 6:30 p.m. in Wally Post.

Briggsdale, Bethune, Hi-Plains and Weldon Valley are playing in the round robin, with games this past Tuesday at NJ, Friday at NJC and Wally Post, and Saturday at Tigers’ Den and Wally Post.

OTIS BOYS

The Otis High School boys basketball team is the top seed in this week’s NCL/YWKC Tournament in Sterling to conclude the regular season.

The Bulldogs beat Fleming 58-30 on Tuesday, and now will play Prairie in the 3:30 p.m. semifinal Friday at NJC. Prairie beat Lone Star 51-39.

Otis is now 17-2 and No. 3 in the 1A CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

The Bulldogs won 73-36 at Flagler last Friday. They scored 34 points in the second quarter for a 53-13 halftime lead. Grady Bechtle had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Dalton DeMers 13 points, Gracen Bechtle eight points, Charlie Kendrick seven points and five steals, Austin Hornung six points, Gavin Price six points, Mitchell Stivers five points and three assists, Cambric Klinzmann four points, six rebounds and four steals, Jacob Perry four points, three rebounds and three steals, Milo Kendrick three points, and Emiliano Varela two rebounds.

Otis won 74-34 at Genoa-Hugo on Saturday, scoring 40 points in the second quarter. Otis statistics were not available.

LONE STAR BOYS

The Lone Star boys basketball team is wrapping up its season in the NCL/YWKC Tournament in Sterling.

The Longhorns played Prairie this past Tuesday in a tournament quarterfinal. They lost 51-39, and now will play Fleming in the consolation semifinals Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Wally Post at Sterling High School.

Lone Star entered the week 8-9 and No. 37 in the 1A CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

The Longhorns won 58-55 at Flagler last Saturday in a game that was tight from start to finish. Grant Kuntz had a big game with 36 points, four rebounds, six assists and eight steals. Anderson Weathers had 13 points, Jesus Hermosillo eight points and nine rebounds, Jack glenn one point, Owen Glenn three rebounds, and Ian Pastor two rebounds.

ARICKREE BOYS

Arickaree’s boys basketball team should be in good shape of advancing to regional as it wraps up the regular season this week in the NCL/YWKC Tournament.

The Bison entered this week 12-8 and No. 18 in the 1A CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index. They opened tourney play Tuesday night at NJC in Sterling against Caliche. They edged the Buffaloes 49-47, and now play Idalia in the 6:30 p.m. semifinal Friday at NJC.

Arickaree split two games last weekend. First up was a 69-52 home win over Briggsdale on Friday. Zarron Skubal had 18 points and five rebounds, Austin Wright 16 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, Dillon Noletubby nine points, five assists and four steals, Bradley Hermes six points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals, Jorge Ramos five points and seven rebounds, and Daniel Goff three points.

Arickaree lost 53-40 at Stratton on Saturday. Wright had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists, Noletubby nine points and two rebounds, King eight points and seven rebounds, Ramos five points and six rebounds, Skubal four points and five rebounds, and Hermes three points and four steals.

OTIS GIRLS

Otis High School’s girls basketball team is wrapping up the regular season in the NCL/YWKC Tournament in Sterling.

The Bulldogs opened tourney play Monday with a 49-41 loss to Briggsdale. Statistics were not available yet. They will play Prairie in a consolation semifinal Friday at 2 p.m. at Sterling High School.

They are 9-10 overall and still in line for a regional berth as they are No. 18 in the 1A CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

Otis lost two games last weekend. The first was a 51-47 decision at Flagler. Otis statistics were not available. The Bulldogs then lost 44-35 at Genoa-Hugo on Saturday. Statistics were not available.

LONE STAR GIRLS

The Lone Star girls basketball teams is in the round robin portion of the NCL/YWKC Tournament this week in Sterling.

They are 10-10 and No. 27 in the 1A CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

Lone Star opened round robin play Monday with a 63-25 win over Peetz at NJC. The Longhorns play Bethune Friday at 11 a.m. in Wally Post at Sterling High School, and play Weldon Valley Saturday, the same place and time.

The Longhorns lost 55-38 at Flagler, last Saturday. Lone Star statistics were not available.

ARICKAREE GIRLS

The Arickaree girls basketball team is wrapping up the regular season this week in the NCL/YWKC Tournament in Sterling.

The Bison lost its quarterfinal Monday at NJC, 49-30 to Fleming. They next play Caliche in a consolation semifinal Friday at 5 p.m. in Wally Post at Sterling High School.

They are 8-13 and No. 25 in the 1A CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

Arickaree lost two games last weekend. The first was a 37-33 home decision to Briggsdale last Friday. Raeya Schrock had 13 points, Gabby Hermes 11 points, Janice Kalcevic four points and four assists, Ja’Niya Smith four points and five rebounds, Paytin Villarreal four rebounds, Gracie Monat three rebounds and Clara Hermes and Lisbeth Ramos two rebounds each.

The Bison lost 59-50 at Stratton on Saturday. Smith had 17 points, five rebounds and four steals, Schrock 14 points and 10 rebounds, Kalcevic nine points, Clara Hermes five points, G. Hermes three points, Monat two points and two assists, and Villarreal two rebounds.
