Yuma High School’s cross country runners will close out the regular season today, October 14, at the Strasburg Invitational, held in nearby Byers.
The runners then well gear up for the regional meet next week with state aspirations in the balance.
YHS hosted the Indian Hills Twilight Cross Country Invitational, October 5, at the golf course.
Runners from six schools, with Wray, Stratton, Wiggins, Highland and Byers joining Yuma.
Three girls teams had enough runners to post a team score, with Yuma winning the team title with 29 points. Wiggins was second with 46, and Stratton third with 51.
Ashley Ibanez won the girls race with a time of 22 minutes, 56.3 seconds. Hailey Eyring was fifth in 24:19.4, Samantha Wells eighth in 25:53.9, Myka McDonald ninth in 25:59.5, and Fatima Duran 10th in 26:15.5 to round out the team scoring. Alyssa Roberts was 12th in 26:58.6, and Wendy Garcia 19th in 28:51.8.
Yuma’s boys finished second out of four schools with team scores, posting 51 points. Wiggins had the top five finishers to claim the team title with 15 points. Highland had 65, and Byers 70.
Angel Escobar was Yuma’s top finisher, placing eighth in 19:37.8, while Jaxson Lungwitz was ninth in 20:18.1, Mely Gonzalez 10th in 20:39.8, Jaime Montanez 16th in 23:58, and Angel Ibarra 20th in 26:03.3.
The 3A Region 3 and Region 5 meets will be October 21 in Lyons.
