Dorothy (Mathies) Polly Spear, 91, entered her eternal home in heaven on October 22, 2024. Born on May 1, 1933 to Joseph & Katherine Mathies on a farm 15 miles northeast of Yuma, CO, the sixth of seven children. The family moved to a school section further north when she was three. She attended North Bryant school through 7th grade, and attended 8th grade in Yuma, at the Lutheran school along with confirmation class.
Dorothy was baptized as an infant at St. John’s Lutheran Church and confirmed in 1948. She worked part time at the Duckwall store while going to Yuma High School. She graduated in 1951 and worked full time at Duckwall for a while after graduation.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Harold Polly on December 14, 1952. They lived in and around Wray where their first son Daniel was born before moving to Yuma in 1954. Daughter Carol and son Dale were born while in Yuma. In 1960, the family moved to Akron where another daughter Cathy was born. When the children were older, Dorothy cleaned house for many years. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Harold in 1992.
On March 30, 1996, Dorothy married Glenn (Pete) Spear at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Akron and built their new home in Akron. She joined the Flying Farmers organization and enjoyed their events as well as trips with the Heritage Club. She was preceded in death by her husband Pete in 2009.
Dorothy’s church and God were a very special part of her life. She always raised a large garden, loved raising flowers and arranging bouquets for her home, her church, as well as for others. She also enjoyed making quilts, crocheting, and doing crafts especially handmade gifts for grandchildren. She took great joy in decorating at the Senior Center. She started a card playing club and enjoyed it for many years. Dorothy was a wonderful baker and always had homemade goodies on hand. Most of all, she loved spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and daughter Carol (Polly) Josh. Survivors include her son Daniel Polly; son-in-law Daryl Josh, granddaughter Tiffini (Josh) Gross and husband Jason Gross, their son Treylan and daughter Trinitti, and grandson Jared Josh, his daughters Ashtyn and Avalyn; son Dale Polly and wife Kathleen, grandson Jason Polly and wife Kathryn, their son Logan and daughter Olivia, and grandson Joshua Polly and wife Katie, their daughters Eliana and Mikaila, and their sons Zachariah and Josiah; daughter Cathy (Polly) Heimann and husband Ron, grandson Justin Heimann, and granddaughter Trisha Heimann, her sons Brenden and Kyler.
A funeral service was held Monday, October 28, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Akron. Interment followed at the Akron Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church of Akron.
