Frustration is mounting in the community in regards to the lack of progress toward reopening the Yuma Post Office.
Even the mobile post office located in the back was closed for nearly one week due to needing some repairs, finally reopening this past Tuesday.
The main building has been closed since last June, after sustaining serious damage to the roof from the May 20, 2024 hail storm. The roof damage led to further interior damage.
The United States Post Office announced it would take anywhere from three months to one year to get the post reopened. It has been six months, nearly going on seven. Patience is wearing thin because it appears nothing is really being done.
Work was done on the roof and the interior during the fall. There was even tempered optimism it could possibly reopen sometime around Thanksgiving. However, a heavy wet snow in early November revealed there were still issues to be resolved.
The building actually is owned by Butler Gulch, LLC, in care of Postal Realty Trust. Butler Gulch, LLS, has a head office address in Vail, according to an online search.
Postal Realty Trust is the only publicly traded real estate investment trust focused on properties leased to the United States Postal Service, according to its website. It is located in Cedarhurst, New York, which is near Long Island.
The Pioneer has emailed Senator John Hickenlooper’s office in hopes of getting some assist from the senator. Mayor Tim McClung said he is working with the Hickenlooper’s office. Local resident Bethleen McCall is attempting to organize a public campaign, but was still waiting to hear from Hickenlooper’s office before moving forward.
Look for more on that effort as soon as it comes into focus.
