The Yuma High School girls wrestlers were scheduled to have their only home appearance of the season today, Thursday, January 20.
The Indians were supposed to host Lamar in The Pit, beginning at 5 p.m. There was going be a Parents Night ceremony prior to the girls dual.
However, YHS learned late Tuesday afternoon that the Lamar girls were not be able to make the trip thanks to a COVID-19 outbreak on the team.
The dual still is going to happen, though, as it has been rescheduled to Thursday, January 27, the same evening the boys team hosts rival Wray.
Earlier in the week, prior to the breaking news, coach Brandon Newton said: “It should be a good one. Hopefully, we can get everyone a match. I hope we get the people to show up, get a big crowd.”
He said everyone on the team should be available after having only six wrestlers able to compete last Saturday in the Poudre Tournament in Fort Collins. The team was short-handed due to illness. The Indians were missing many of their top point scorers.
“I think if we would’ve had everybody, we might have won it,” Newton said, “but again some of those other teams might have been dealing with the same thing as us.”
Yuma still scored 46 points to finish seventh in the 17-school field. Discovery Canyon won the team title with 67 points.
Ashley Marshall led the way by placing third at 111 pounds. She won her first match by fall, but then lost a close 6-4 decisoin to Denver South’s Kiana Suro in the quarterfinals. Marshall rallied to win three straight matches in the consolation bracket, all by fall, including getting revenge on Suro with a pin at 3 minutes, 25 seconds into their third-place match.
Chloe Smith placed fourth at 105. She lost in the quarterfinals, then won two straight in the consolation bracket, before losing by fall in the third-place match. Camila Sanchez won one match at 100 pounds, as did Destiny Henderson at 136. Ximena Garcia competed at 127 pounds, and Natalia Serrano at 161.
The Indians will be action Saturday at the Loveland Tournament.
