Girls wrestlers headed to Colorado Springs

The Yuma High School girls wrestling team is heading to Colorado Springs this weekend after a solid start to the 2021-22 season, last Saturday.
The Indians have duals with Mesa Ridge and Grand Junction, Friday night at Mesa Ridge, then will compete in the Mesa Ridge Tournament on Saturday.
They opened the season last Saturday by tying for sixth place in the Arapahoe Warriors Invitational. Doherty won the team title with 122 points, while Chatfield had 119, Douglas County 112, Vista Ridge 110, Eaglecest 88.5 and Yuma and Legacy both with 68. There was a total of 15 teams in the tournament.
Fatima Duran led the way by placing second at 127 pounds. She opened the tournament with three straight pins: in 1:02 over Cassandra Shelhamer of Arapahoe, in 26 seconds over Jasmine Dominguez of Jefferson, and in 57 seconds over Savannah Brehm of Chatfield. The senior then ran into Regis Jesuit’s Alexis Segura in the championship match, getting pinned at the 2:50 mark.
Mia Dischner took third place at 185 pounds. She won by fall in the quarterfinals over Legacy’s Ella Stevens (1:37), but lost by fall in the semifinals to Coronado’s Marissa Rosario (1:25). She recovered to win the third-place match by fall (2:49) over Mountain Vista’s Lauren DiPasquale.
Yuma’s other placer was Ashley Marshall going 3-2 while placing sixth at 111 pounds. She opened with a win by fall (3:10) over Sadie Corn of Olathe. She lost in the quarterfinals, but won two matches by fall in the consolation bracket, in 54 seconds over teammate Peyton Hynson, and in 1:13 over Mountain Vista’s Nic Honig. She lost by fall in the fifth-place match.
