Mike Leerar seeks another term as District 3 Commissioner

By Mike Leerar

I am honored to announce my candidacy for re-election as Yuma County Commissioner for District 3. Since 2022, I have had the privilege of serving you on the Board of County Commissioners, and I am eager to continue the progress we have made together.

For nearly all my adult life, I have called Yuma County home. Since marrying my wife Jeannie in 1989, we have been deeply rooted in this community and investing in its growth and prosperity.

My tenure on the Board of County Commissioners has been marked by dedication to enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of our county’s operations. One of our significant achievements during this time has been the improvement in the efficiencies of road and bridge grader operators, a focus area for the board. Drawing upon my experience managing farm equipment dealerships in northeast Colorado, where I oversaw multi-million-dollar budgets and personnel, I have brought valuable insights to the table. Re-engaging courthouse staff through monthly department head meetings has been pivotal. Each department shares best practices and needs, fostering a collaborative and productive environment. Additionally, despite facing challenges with revenue, particularly a decrease in property tax revenue due to State Legislation over the past two years, I’m proud to say that we’ve managed to balance the county budget.

Furthermore, my service as a trustee for the Town of Eckley and as its mayor for a decade has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of municipal finance methods. Additionally, my involvement with Plains Telephone as a board member for 14 years has contributed to expanding our telecommunications services to include Burlington and Wray.

I have been deeply committed to rural advocacy, serving as a member of the Yuma County Water Authority for all but two years since its inception. Additionally, Jeannie and I, along with another partner, have owned and operated the Eckley Bar & Grill for over six years, further solidifying my ties to our community.

Yuma County holds a special place in my heart, and I am dedicated to preserving its values and identity. As your commissioner, I have tirelessly worked to defend rural interests and ensure that our county remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

But I cannot do this alone. I need your support to continue serving as your voice on the Board of County Commissioners. Together, we can uphold the values that make Yuma County unique and prosperous.

I humbly ask for your vote and support in the upcoming election. Let us work hand in hand to keep Yuma County strong and vibrant.
