Outlaw baseball trying to keep moving up

Yuma High School’s baseball team is well into the 2025 season now.

The Outlaws are 6-3 and No. 4 in the CHSAA 2A Selection and Seeding Index, heading into Saturday’s home game against Platte Valley. (11 a.m. first pitch.) The Broncos, 8-3, were No. 10 in the 2A Index earlier this week.

Dayspring Christian Academy was No. 1 prior to any games played this week, with Fowler in second, Denver Christian third, Monte Vista fourth, SkyView Academy fifth and Limon sixth.

The Outlaws swept Sedgwick County, 13-1 and 11-5, last Saturday in Ovid. They then traveled to Haxtun, ranked No. 1 in 1A, this past Tuesday for two more. Yuma got a huge win in the opener, 6-2, and just missed getting the sweep as a valiant comeback came up short in the nightcap with an 8-6 loss.

Yuma quickly took control of the first game last Saturday in Ovid, scoring four, two and three runs in the first three frames for a 9-0 lead.

Silas Baucke drove in a run in the first after Jesus Rodriguez doubled. Alex Pensado’s single drove in Chris Wario and Baucke, and Pensado scored after Brody Kallweit hit a double. In the second, Lennox Huwa drove in Marvin Duarte, and Reyli Trejo’s double scored Huwa.

Kallweit doubled and scored on Jose Mario Ross’s single in the third, Ross scored on Duarte’s sacrifice fly to center, and Stevie Seward, courtesy running for Rodriguez, scored on Baucke’s double.

The Outlaws added four more in the top of the fifth for a 13-0 lead. Seward and Huwa scored on an error, and Pensado drove in Christian Thomson and Baucke.

Sedgwick County helped Yuma’s cause with eight errors. The Outlaws were clean in the field.

Trejo went the first two innings on the hill, not allowing a hit or a run, striking out four and walking three. Eric Wario pitched the final three, allowing one run on two hits, striking out five and walking one.

Rodriguez led Yuma’s 12-hit attack with two doubles, Kallweit had two doubles, one RBI and one run scored, Baucke a double among his two hits, two RBI and two runs, Pensado two hits, four RBI and one run, Trejo a double and one RBI, Huwa one hit, one RBI and two runs, Ross one hit, one RBI and one run, Duarte one hit, one RBI and one run, and Thomson one run.

The Outlaws kept going deep into their pitching staff with two games against Haxtun coming up on Tuesday.

Rodriguez traded in his usual catching gear to take the mound to start the nightcap. The freshman went 4-2/3 innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits and five walks but notched 13 strikeouts. Ross, also a freshman, went the final 2-1/3, striking out three, walking one, and allowing one run on two hits.

The Outlaws trailed 2-1 after the first, but methodically chipped away with three in the third, and two each in the fourth and fifth for an 8-4 lead heading into the sixth. They plated three more runs in their last two at-bats for the 11-5 win.

Trejo had a triple among his three hits with two RBI, Seward (another freshman) two hits including a double, one RBI and three runs, Huwa a double, one RBI and three runs, Baucke a double, and two runs, C. Wario a double and two RBI, Rodriguez one hit and one RBI, Duarte one hit and one run, and Pensado and Ross one run each. Sedgwick County again helped with seven errors, while Yuma had one.

The Outlaws were on the road again Tuesday to take on a tough Haxtun Bulldogs’ squad. They did themselves a big favor with a 6-2 win over 1A’s No. 1 team in the first game.

Yuma took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Trejo’s single drove in Seward (courtesy running for Baucke) and Huwa.

It was 2-1 when Yuma pushed across three more in the top of the fifth. Kallweit scored on a bases-loaded walk, and Pensado hit a two-run single to score C. Wario and Huwa. Huwa’s single in the sixth drove in Duarte for a 6-2 lead.

Baucke went the first six innings on the hill for the win. He allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and six walks, striking out seven. Kallweit closed the game in the seventh with two strikeouts and one walk.

Huwa had two hits, one RBI and two runs, Trejo one hit and three RBI, Pensado one hit and two RBI, Kallweit one hit and one run, and Duarte and Seward one run each.

Yuma scored first in the nightcap, but then fell behind 5-1 heading into the third. The Outlaws got to within 5-3, but Haxtun plated three runs in the fifth.

However, the Outlaws came back with three of their own in top of the sixth to trail 8-6. They had their chances in their last at-bat but came up short against the Bulldogs.

Rodriguez had a double among this two hits, with two RBI, Huwa one hit, one RBI and two runs, C. Wario one hit and one run, Duarte two runs, and Trejo one RBI.

Trejo pitched the first two innings to take the loss. Ross threw 2-1/3 innings, and Kallweit 1-2/3. They combined for four strikeouts, five walks and six earned runs on 10 hits.
