Outlaw wrestlers prepping for regional

It is a rest weekend for the Yuma High School girls wrestling team before gearing up for the postseason.

The Outlaws’ only action this week is a home dual against Fort Morgan on Thursday, January 30, at 6 p.m. They ended up dominating the dual, winning five of the six matches decided on the mat.

They then will host a Class 4A Regional the next weekend.

“The break we get does come at a good time,” coach Brandon Newton said. “We really worked the girls hard in practice last week and had a super busy week with wrestling and travel. This will be good for recovery and we will have time to work on things in the practice room for regionals.”

The grapplers were plenty busy last week, including taking second in the Patriot League Tournament last Friday at Platte Valley in Kersey.

Wiggins won the league title with 120 points, while Yuma was right behind with 115. Sterling had 106, Strasburg 83, Fort Morgan 74.5, Platte Valley 52, Weld Central 51, Brush 39, Liberty Common 17 and University 12.

“The Patriot League Tournament did go well for most of the team with some good matches,” Newton said. “We also saw a couple schools we have not seen this year yet.”

Five Outlaws finished in the top two of their weights, including three champions.

Chloe Smith won three matches in a round-robin format to take first place at 110 pounds. The senior won all of her matches by fall, two of them in the first period and the other early in the second.

Gese Sanchez won the 190-pound title in a tournament bracket. She received a bye into the semifinals, where she won with a 16-second pin. She met Wiggins’ Mackenzee Steinbar in the first-place match, getting the win by fall in 2:32.

Danika Dischner went 2-0 at 235 to take first. Her first win was by fall, and her second by major decision.

Taelynn Robinson took second at 105 in a round robin. She lost her first match, but then won her next two by fall.

Sierra Brown took second at 145 in a round robin. She also lost her first match, but won her next two by fall

Kenya Arvizo went 2-2 in a tournament bracket to place fourth at 120. Nubia Sosa won one match at 155.

The Outlaws then competed in the Chatfield Lady War Horse Invitational in Littleton on Saturday. They placed 25th in the 39-team field with 31.5 points. Pomona won the team title with 120.

Sanchez placed second at 190. She won her quarterfinal by fall in 1:30, and her semifinal by fall in 47 seconds. However, she then was pinned by Parice Jones of Vista Peak in the first-place match.

Robinson got one win at 105, Smith one win at 110, and Dischner one win at 235. Brown competed at 145. Arvizo and Sosa competed in the Silver division.
