Self-care is child abuse prevention

Yuma County, CO – This April, Yuma County Department of Human Services is joining
organizations and communities across the state to recognize Child Abuse Prevention
Month, emphasizing the importance of ensuring families have the support they need
before challenges become crises.

As part of a series, Yuma County Department of Human Services will be providing tips to prevent child abuse through the month of April.
According to the Courageous Parents Network, if you don’t see to your own physical
and emotional well-being, it is much more difficult to manage your responsibilities,
including parenting children. As parents and caregivers, finding time may be difficult but
by taking advantage of naptime, and utilizing family and friends, self-care can be done
and should become a priority.

First and foremost, ensure you are getting enough rest, exercise and fresh air. Nap
when your child naps, take your child for walks outside, and if you are able, take a walk
or jog outside by yourself.

Here are some more tips to take care of you.
There are many free or low-cost online platforms and videos that can guide you through
yoga and meditation as well as exercise for every level of fitness. Express yourself
creatively through writing, drawing, dancing, or even playing with Play-Doh. Take time
to practice deep breathing, practice gratitude, and connect with others.
If finding time for yourself is impossible, incorporate self-care activities while caring for
children. Teach your children deep breathing, go to the park or for a walk together, or
have a dance party. Share your creative side with your children, join a parent-child
group, or listen to music together. Self-care does not need to be expensive or time
consuming and, when practiced regularly, will improve your emotional and physical well-
being as well as improve your parent/child relationship.
