Yuma’s Cal Ripken 12U and 10U baseball teams will be competing in their respective state tournaments this weekend, both in the south Denver area.

The 12U team will play in the 2019 12s Colorado State Tournament, Friday through Sunday, July 5-8, at the Hargrove Complex at Holly Hills in southeast Denver. Also in the tournament are teams from Southeast Denver, La Junta, East Central, Sterling and Lamar.

The format is different this year as there will be pool play, followed by a single-elimination bracket. Yuma is in the National Division pool with Southeast Denver and East Central.

The young Indians will play their first game Friday at 6:30 p.m. against East Central, then play Southeast Denver on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The teams then will be seeded, according to their finish in pool play, into a single-elimination bracket. The first two games will be Saturday at 4 and 6 p.m.

The winners of those games will advance to face the top seeds from each pool in the semifinals on Sunday at 10 a.m. and 12 noon. The state championship game will be played at 4 p.m.

The state champion will advance to the Midwest Regional, July 17-21, in Chadron, Nebraska.

Yuma’s 12U team is coached by Jordan Sprouse, Jake Gordon and Steven Wells. The players are Adrian Carranza, Felipe Carranza, Yaretzi Castillo, Noah Hansen, Tanner Himes, Caden McCreath, Brody Sheffield, Tayte Smith, Jonathan Thomson, Reyli Trejo, Carlos Wario, Eric Wario and Anderson Weathers.

Yuma’s 10U team will play in the 2019 10s Colorado State Tournament at the Village Greens in Greenwood Village, Friday through Sunday, July 5-7. Also in the tournament are Centennial, Broomfield, Lamar, Sterling, East Central and Southeast Denver.

Like the 12s, there will be pool play followed by a single-elimination bracket. Yuma will play Centennial at 3:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a game against Lamar at 5:30 p.m. The teams then will be seeded into the single-elimination bracket. All three first-round games will be played Saturday at 1 p.m., with the semifinals set for 5 p.m.

The winners will advance to the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The state champion will advance to the Midwest Regional, July 17-21.

Yuma’s 10U team is coached by Conner McCoy and Giovanni Rodriguez. Playing for Yuma are Jadrel Diaz, Gage Gleghorn, Lennox Huwa, Maddox King, Bryan Montes, Alejandro Pensado, Zach Ptacnick, Jesus Rodriguez, Jose Ross, Stevie Seward, Christian Thomson, and Chris Wario.

The Yuma 10U and 12U teams had good runs in the Jeff Armstrong Tournament in Yuma, last weekend.

The 10U team came in second, losing to the Plainsmen in the championship game, while the 12U team made it to the semifinals before getting knocked out. The 12U championship game, between the Titans and East Central 12s was called off due to weather. Here are some photos from the weekend.)
