A man who had barricaded himself in a rural home in Washington County eventually was taken into custody without incident, last Friday.
On August 30 at approximately 9:45 a.m., the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a disturbance at a residence in the 34000 block of County Road 44. Officers also were notified that a male subject in the home was shooting a pistol randomly inside the residence. All other individuals inside the home, including a small child, had gotten out of the home safely and were no longer close to the residence.
WCSO contacted one of the witnesses, who said that there was only the male subject, identified as Matthew Martin, at the residence and had barricaded himself inside the home.
A perimeter was set up around the home, and the Yuma Police Department was called for assistance with their negotiator and drone services. Several attempts were made to contact Martin, but he did not respond.
At that point a call placed to the Northeast Regional SWAT team to ask for assistance in getting Martin out of the home. Northeast Regional SWAT along with Adams County SWAT arrived on the scene a few hours later.
The WCSO obtained a search warrant for the residence and an arrest warrant for Martin.
Both SWAT teams approached the residence and Martin was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Washington County Detention Facility for booking, and will remain there until advisement.
Martin is facing charges of felony menacing, child abuse and reckless endangerment. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Washington County Sheriff Rob Furrow thanked the Yuma Police Department, Northeast Regional SWAT and Adams County SWAT for their assistance.
