The Yuma County Cattlemen’s Association annual 2022-23 YCCA Original Feedlot Performance and Carcass Contest will kick off with the delivery of steers to Schramm Feedlot on Saturday November 12.
Steers may be delivered during the week prior to November 12 if unable to deliver on that date, but one should call the feedlot beforehand at 970-848-3831, to make sure they can take them. Two other drop-off sites will be available this year. One can take steers to Tri-State Livestock Sale Barn in Wray, or Gibson Feedlot at Joes by noon on November 12, and YCCA will deliver them to Schramm. If steer doesn’t have owner’s brand, brand clearance papers need to accompany the steer.
Steers can be raised by the entrant, or purchased. A steer can have multiple owners. If someone wants to participate, but doesn’t have a steer, there will be steers available for purchase of a percentage or whole steer. Contact one of the contest chairs, or Tom at the feedlot to find out about finding a steer.
YCCA will retain 10 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the steers to finance its projects, including beef promotion and YCCA Scholarships. The balance, minus all expenses, will be returned to the entrants who win overall champion or reserve champion, or who place in the top ten steers in rate of gain or carcass value.
The steers will be put on a 30-day warm-up ration after being delivered on November 12, and the contest will officially begin with weigh-in December 12 and 13. The contest will end with two weigh-outs the week of June 1, 2023. The results will be announced at the Annual YCCA Banquet and Awards Night in Eckley June 24. A midway weight will be taken in March for the YCCA Auction and Oyster Supper on March 25, in Eckley.
