The Yuma High School boys golf team keeps playing well as it moves into a busy stretch.
The Outlaws played three tournaments last week, and have three more in coming days. They were at the Frontier Academy Invitational on Wednesday of this week, and are at the Burlington Invitational on Friday and the Sterling Invitational on Monday. That will wrap up the varsity’s regular season except for the league tournament on September 26 in Sterling.
After a strong showing at the Wray Invitational last Tuesday (see last week’s article), the Outlaws were at the Eaton Invitational on Thursday.
Coach Benjamin Weathers said the team usually struggles at Eaton Country Club, but it was different last week as the Outlaws had a strong team score of 269.
“Once again we didn’t start out very well but got things figured out about half way through the round and finished really strong,” Weathers reported. “I’m not for sure if the rough start was from the really early wake up call for the day but they all did a good job not letting the scores get out of hand.”
JJ Ward led the way by shooting an 84, and Alexander Weathers was not far behind with an 88. Noah Hansen shot a 97, and Carter Benish came in with a 106.
Weathers took an all-senior group to the Holyoke Invitational on Friday. The Outlaws finished second in the team standings behind Wray with a 263.
Ward was the top medalist, scoring a 76 for his lowest round in a high school tournament. Brodie Castillo had his best round of the season with an 89, while Will Noble carded a 98, and Hansen 117.
