Volleyball is having the quickest turnaround of all local high school sports, coming off of 2020-21’s COVID-impacted seasons.
Volleyball was held during Season C, concluding in mid-May, with the Yuma Indians making another trip to the Class 2A State Tournament.
Now with Colorado’s high school sports apparently returning to normal scheduling for 2021-22, it will not be long before official preseason practices begin for volleyball.
In fact, the Indians’ season opener is just a little more than one month away as they will compete in the Kit Carson Tournament on August 21.
Several seniors graduated from the spring’s Season C team, which found its stride in the final week of the regular season and rode it all the way to the state tournament, where the Tribe lost in the quarterfinals to eventual-state champion Wiggins.
However, many contributing players return, and there is promising young talent also coming up through the ranks as the JV and C teams enjoyed highly-successful spring seasons.
Yuma will try to work its way back toward the top of the Lower Platte Activities Association, which it dominated for most of a decade, when it opens league play at a tough Sedgwick County squad on August 31.
The Tribe will be on the road for league matches at Caliche (September 24), at defending 1A champion Merino (October 5), at defending 2A champion Wiggins (October 8), and at Holyoke (October 29).
Yuma has home league matches against Akron (September 16), Haxtun (September 28), and Wray (October 19).
Non-league trips include visits to Pine Bluffs (Wyoming), Chase County (Nebraska), University in Greeley, and Resurrection Christian in Loveland. The Indians will be in The Pit for non-league matches against Brush, Limon, Sidney (Nebraska) and Sterling.
Besides opening the season with a tournament, the Tribe will play in a tournament at Alliance, Nebraska, on October 23.
Regionals are scheduled for November 5-6. State tournaments, which will return to the three-day double-elimination format, will be November 11-13.
