Yuma boys wrestling opens season

Yuma High School’s boys wrestling team opens its 2024-25 season with two events this week.

The Outlaws had a dual at Wray, the preseason No. 1 team in 2A, on Thursday, December 5.

It comes less than one week after Wray won the 1A football title. However, Yuma coach Presley Papachek said he fully expects to have a lineup ready for the Outlaws.

They will be back in action Saturday at the Chuck Annand Invitational in Akron.

Yuma likely will fill all but two weights this season.

“We’re looking solid,” Papachek said. “Some are dwindling away, we’re down to 15, but for the most part we have most of the weights filled.

The coach said the preseason practices have been encouraging.

“I’m excited,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of effort. What we lack in experience we make up in effort.”

The team features mostly returning wrestlers and some freshmen. Senior James Brandner and sophomore Christian Thomson are new to the wrestling team.

Sophomore Cooper Blach is set at 106 pounds, with sophomore Josiah Perez at 113, junior Esteban Gonzalez 120, sophomore Augi Montes de Oca 126, freshman Thomas Deal 132, junior Blake Stivers 132, freshman David Gaytan 138, junior Ethan Nadow 144, junior Dallas Brunk 150, Thomson 165, junior Daden Beauprez 175, junior Tyson Hansen and Brandner 190, and freshman Bryan Montes 220.

“In Akron we’ll see a bunch of the teams that will be in our region,” Papachek said.
