Yuma High School’s cross country teams gave it a good run, but came up short in their bids to qualify for the state meet.
“A shout out to the seniors, Kevin, Jaime, Nuvia and the team captain, Javi,” head coach Robert Zahller said.
The boys and girls teams competed in the Class 2A Region 2 Meet, last Thursday at Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs.
The girls came close finishing in the top five to qualify for state, but could not quite get there. Nobody qualified individually either. Ashley Ibanez finished 21st with a time of 23 minutes, 32.8 seconds. Myka McDonald was 39th in 25:09.3, Kenya Arvizo 42nd in 26:09, Alyssa Roberts 52nd in 27:27.5, and Nuvia Vega 62nd in 29:24.7.
The boys finished a couple of spots out of qualifying as a team, or individually. Angel Escobar placed 30th in 19:11.9, Javier Duran 36th in 19:43.6, Jiovani Perez 45th in 20:22.7, Silas Chambers 47th in 20:54, and Hugo Olivas 49th in 20:59.7. Also running for Yuma were Liam McClaran, Anderson Weathers and Kevin Orona.
“We were proud of the effort in the Springs,” Zahller said. “There was a lot of good learning that came from that race for our young team.”
