Yuma High School’s girls wrestling team will be sending 10 to the North Regional in Broomfield, Saturday, for a shot at qualifying for next week’s state tournament.
The top four in each weight will advance to state, which will be held at Ball Arena.
“I think we’re ready,” head coach Brandon Newton said. “Everyone’s looking forward to it.”
The North Regional has 24 schools, including Chatfield, Eaglecrest, Doherty, Bennett, Abraham Lincoln, Berthoud, Brighton, Broomfield, Brush, Englewood, Fleming, Legacy, Mead, Greeley West, Platte Canyon, Platte Valley, Riverdale Ridge, Severance, Skyview, Standley Lake, Vista Peak, Westminster, and Wiggins.
“Our region is real tough,” Newton said. “Some weights are just stacked, but I tell the girls that we’ve got to wrestle them at some point anyway.”
He added that it looks like eight of the top 16 ranked teams in the state are in the regional.
Yuma wrestlers expected to compete at regional are Myka McDonald at 100, Chloe Smith 105, Payton Hynson 110, Ashley Marshall 115, Kenya Arvizo 120, Laura Estrada 125, Destiny Henderson 130, Abril Montes de Oca 135, Gese Sanchez 170, and Danika Dischner 190.
Newton said it appears at least four or five should be seeded in the top four of their weights, but that will not be determined until later in the week.
“I would like to get six to state,” he said.
Three wrestlers went to Platte Valley last Friday to take on the Broncos’ three wrestlers. Dischner won her match, while Myka McDonald and Sanchez lost their matches.
