Yuma High School will be sending a group of four to the Girls State Wrestling Tournament, Friday and Saturday at Thornton High School.
“The whole girls group is fun to be around, and they aver very competitive and prepare themselves very well,” coach Rory Lynch said. “We’re pretty happy to have four going to state.”
There is just one classification in girls wrestling, which is in its final year as a pilot sport and will be sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association beginning next school year.
Yuma’s Fatima Duran, Mia Dischner, Eva Ruiz and Ashley Marshall will be competing this weekend. They qualified for state during last weekend’s regional at Fort Lupton High School, where the Indians finished seventh as a team out of 20 schools.
Duran placed third at 111 pounds, while Marshall was fourth at 105, Ruiz fourth at 161, and Dischner fourth at 185.
The top five wrestlers in each weight qualified for state.
The tournament begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, when the first three rounds will be done. Action resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. and will continue until champions are crowned later in the day.
Friday will include the first round, the quarterfinals and first round of consolation.
Saturday will begin with the second round of consolation, followed by championship semifinals, third round of consolations and the consolation semifinals. There will be a 45-minute lunch break, then the third-place and fifth-place matches, followed by the championship matches.
Marshall, 6-7, opens Friday against Coronado’s Candice Brickell.
Duran, 16-5, goes up against Fort Lupton’s Lashya Tijerina, 14-11, in the first round.
Ruiz, 13-10, opens against Chatfield’s Isabel Garcia, 22-8.
Dischner, 14-5, takes on SGC’s Isabella Durgan, 5-2, in the first round.
